Ganesport Institute, Indonesia’s first think-tank in sport policy and management, presented its study about leadership of football association at the 2019 Play the Game conference taking place on Oct. 13 to 16 in Colorado Springs, United States.
Play the Game is an international sport conference held regularly by the Danish Institute for Sports Studies (Idan), an agency set up by the Danish Ministry of Culture and often gets backing from the European Commission.
Being the conference’s only speaker invited from Indonesia, Ganesport’s co-founder and director Amal Ganesha presented the findings of the research entitled ‘Do Good Leaders Matter? A Study Assessing Ideal Leaders for Indonesian Football.’
“Our study finds that integrity is the most crucial [quality] and thus should be at the top of the list when looking for an ideal person to lead a football association,” said Amal during his session on Tuesday (15/10/2019).
The study highlighted six additional qualities for ideal supreme leaders of organizations like football association, namely independence, the ability to stay clear of politics, a successful career history, diplomatic intelligence, deep knowledge of the sport and a senior-level position in their chosen career.
Marking its 11th presence, Play the Game this year invited other top speakers coming from top sport organizations across the globe such as the world’s football governing body FIFA, the Europeans’ football authority UEFA, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the world’s athletics federation IAAF, Sport Ireland, Danish football association DBU, the US Olympics and Paralympics Committee (USOPC) and many others.
Originally released in July in Jakarta, the Ganesport’s study involved assessments from 23 sport management and governance experts from around the world, including Indonesia. The results of the study are intended as insight for Indonesian football as it’s currently in the middle of a search for a new chairman and board members for the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI).
